Key: Call

CALL people to repent and be baptized

Jesus commanded people: “The time has come; the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!”[1]

Stephanas was aware that Peter followed Jesus’ example. After the crowd heard Peter’s message on the Day of Pentecost, they were cut to the heart and asked, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you….”[2] Those who had repented, believed and received the Holy Spirit, confirmed it through baptism. The apostles counted people who were baptized that day, and realized the church had grown from 120 to over 3,000!

Likewise, Stephanas and his team baptized sincerely repentant sinners without unnecessary delays, usually the same day they professed faith. When possible, they would baptize whole families.[3] New believers were rapidly incorporated into the life and ministry of the newly born church.
